For example, an affiliate program might pay affiliates 20% commission on the transactions they generate, plus 5% of the total earnings of the affiliates that sign up directly under them (that's 5% of 20%, of course). Alternatively, they may pay a flat affiliate referral fee, for example "US$10 bonus for each new affiliate you refer that produces at least US$25 in sales." Two-tier affiliate programs are good for affiliates who believe they can recruit other productive affiliates. However, you should be wary of any affiliate program that places more emphasis on the earnings to be made by recruiting other affiliates than on the earnings from sales - after all, ultimately someone has to close those sales! You should also be suspicious of programs structured with a very low first-tier payout but a very high second-tier commission - again, that type of structure emphasises the recruiting of affiliates over the sale of products. Two-tier programs are less attractive for affiliates who don't like the idea of essentially recruiting their own competition, or who are exceptionally good at pre-selling customers. In this case, a single-tier affiliate program would be more appropriate. Multi-tier Affiliate Programs Multi-tier affiliate programs reward affiliates who sign up other affiliates several levels "deep". In other words, you sign up Bob and Bob signs up Sarah and Sarah signs up John, and you get a percentage of Bob's earnings, Sarah's earnings and John's earnings. The distinction between multi-tier affiliate programs and pyramid schemes is wafer-thin, and one which this site declines to pursue further. You can find ads like this everywhere - from the street light and telephone pole on your corner to your newspaper and PC. While you may find these ads appealing, especially if you can't work outside your home, proceed with caution. Not all work-at-home opportunities deliver on their promises.

Many ads omit the fact that you may have to work many hours without pay. Or they don't disclose all the costs you will have to pay. Countless work-at-home schemes require you to spend your own money to place newspaper ads; make photocopies; or buy the envelopes, paper, stamps, and other supplies or equipment you need to do the job. The companies sponsoring the ads also may demand that you pay for instructions or "tutorial" software. Consumers deceived by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, in addition to their time and energy.

Classic Work-at-Home Schemes
Several types of offers are classic work-at-home schemes.

Medical billing. Ads for pre-packaged businesses - known as billing centers - are in newspapers, on television and on the Internet. If you respond, you'll get a sales pitch that may sound something like this: There's "a crisis" in the health care system, due partly to the overwhelming task of processing paper claims. The solution is electronic claim processing. Because only a small percentage of claims are transmitted electronically, the market for billing centers is wide open.

The promoter also may tell you that many doctors who process claims electronically want to "outsource" or contract out their billing services to save money. Promoters will promise that you can earn a substantial income working full or part time, providing services like billing, accounts receivable, electronic insurance claim processing and practice management to doctors and dentists. They also may assure you that no experience is required, that they will provide clients eager to buy your services or that their qualified salespeople will find clients for you.

The reality: you will have to sell. These promoters rarely provide experienced sales staff or contacts within the medical community.

The promoter will follow up by sending you materials that typically include a brochure, application, sample diskettes, a contract (licensing agreement), disclosure document, and in some cases, testimonial letters, videocassettes and reference lists. For your investment of $2,000 to $8,000, a promoter will promise software, training and technical support. And the company will encourage you to call its references. Make sure you get many names from which to chose. If only one or two names are given, they may be "shills" - people hired to give favorable testimonials. It's best to interview people in person, preferably where the business operates, to reduce your risk of being mislead by shills and also to get a better sense of how the business works.

Few consumers who purchase a medical billing business opportunity are able to find clients, start a business and generate revenues - let alone recover their investment and earn a substantial income. Competition in the medical billing market is fierce and revolves around a number of large and well-established firms.

Envelope stuffing. Promoters usually advertise that, for a "small" fee, they will tell you how to earn money stuffing envelopes at home. Later - when it's too late - you find out that the promoter never had any employment to offer. Instead, for your fee, you're likely to get a letter telling you to place the same "envelope-stuffing" ad in newspapers or magazines, or to send the ad to friends and relatives. The only way you'll earn money is if people respond to your work-at-home ad.

Assembly or craft work. These programs often require you to invest hundreds of dollars in equipment or supplies. Or they require you to spend many hours producing goods for a company that has promised to buy them. For example, you might have to buy a sewing or sign-making machine from the company, or materials to make items like aprons, baby shoes or plastic signs. However, after you've purchased the supplies or equipment and performed the work, fraudulent operators don't pay you. In fact, many consumers have had companies refuse to pay for their work because it didn't meet "quality standards."

Unfortunately, no work is ever "up to standard," leaving workers with relatively expensive equipment and supplies - and no income. To sell their goods, these workers must find their own customers.

Questions to Ask
Legitimate work-at-home program sponsors should tell you - in writing - what's involved in the program they are selling. Here are some questions you might ask a promoter:

What tasks will I have to perform? (Ask the program sponsor to list every step of the job.)
Will I be paid a salary or will my pay be based on commission?
Who will pay me?
When will I get my first paycheck?
What is the total cost of the work-at-home program, including supplies, equipment and membership fees? What will I get for my money?
The answers to these questions may help you determine whether a work-at-home program is appropriate for your circumstances, and whether it is legitimate.

You also might want to check out the company with your local consumer protection agency, state Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau, not only where the company is located, but also where you live. These organizations can tell you whether they have received complaints about the work-at-home program that interests you. But be wary: the absence of complaints doesn't necessarily mean the company is legitimate. Unscrupulous companies may settle complaints, change their names or move to avoid detection.

. El Gordo/Lotteria Primitiva: Recipients are told they have won money in a lottery and asked to provide their personal financial details and send money to pay government taxes before receiving their winnings.

3. UK lottery: Email notification tells of a major lottery win in a European sweepstakes. Victims are required to pay fees and charges to release their winnings.

4. Maria Rosais: A typical psychic scam. She claims a dark force is stopping you from winning $30,000 and her crystals and precious stones, plus her ritual, will drive it away for a cost of $62.

5. Opportunities Unlimited and North American Award Centre: These companies send letters telling the recipients they have won up to $40,000. In reality, recipients have been given an opportunity to enter a prize draw by paying $22.

6. Blanche Calmette: A psychic scam. Blanche tells people something strange is happening and she is anxious to do their astrological chart. For $79.95 you'll confirm your address, so it can be passed on to other sharks.

7. National Awards Commission: Letters tell people they have won up to $US1 million. It's a sweepstake and for an entry fee of $24.95 or $68, all that's guaranteed is a piece of junk jewellery and more offers to be ripped off.

8. International Awards Treasury: This scam sends consumers a letter advising they hold a unique $100,000 cash payment number. No money is actually won, just the chance to enter a sweepstake and receive a piece of junk jewellery if you send $29.97.

9. Employment emails: This asks people to apply for fictitious jobs, then their bank accounts are used to launder money gained from credit-card and bank-account scams, effectively hiding the transfer and using the consumer as a money mule.

"WORK AT HOME" - You can find ads like this everywhere - from the street light and telephone pole on your corner to your newspaper and PC. While you may find these ads appealing, especially if you can't work outside your home, proceed with caution. Not all work-at-home opportunities deliver on their promises.

Many ads omit the fact that you may have to work many hours without pay. Or they don't disclose all the costs you will have to pay. Countless work-at-home schemes require you to spend your own money to place newspaper ads; make photocopies; or buy the envelopes, paper, stamps, and other supplies or equipment you need to do the job. The companies sponsoring the ads also may demand that you pay for instructions or "tutorial" software. Consumers deceived by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, in addition to their time and energy.

Classic Work-at-Home Schemes
Several types of offers are classic work-at-home schemes.

Medical billing. Ads for pre-packaged businesses - known as billing centers - are in newspapers, on television and on the Internet. If you respond, you'll get a sales pitch that may sound something like this: There's "a crisis" in the health care system, due partly to the overwhelming task of processing paper claims. The solution is electronic claim processing. Because only a small percentage of claims are transmitted electronically, the market for billing centers is wide open.

The promoter also may tell you that many doctors who process claims electronically want to "outsource" or contract out their billing services to save money. Promoters will promise that you can earn a substantial income working full or part time, providing services like billing, accounts receivable, electronic insurance claim processing and practice management to doctors and dentists. They also may assure you that no experience is required, that they will provide clients eager to buy your services or that their qualified salespeople will find clients for you.

The reality: you will have to sell. These promoters rarely provide experienced sales staff or contacts within the medical community.

The promoter will follow up by sending you materials that typically include a brochure, application, sample diskettes, a contract (licensing agreement), disclosure document, and in some cases, testimonial letters, videocassettes and reference lists. For your investment of $2,000 to $8,000, a promoter will promise software, training and technical support. And the company will encourage you to call its references. Make sure you get many names from which to chose. If only one or two names are given, they may be "shills" - people hired to give favorable testimonials. It's best to interview people in person, preferably where the business operates, to reduce your risk of being mislead by shills and also to get a better sense of how the business works.

Few consumers who purchase a medical billing business opportunity are able to find clients, start a business and generate revenues - let alone recover their investment and earn a substantial income. Competition in the medical billing market is fierce and revolves around a number of large and well-established firms.

Envelope stuffing. Promoters usually advertise that, for a "small" fee, they will tell you how to earn money stuffing envelopes at home. Later - when it's too late - you find out that the promoter never had any employment to offer. Instead, for your fee, you're likely to get a letter telling you to place the same "envelope-stuffing" ad in newspapers or magazines, or to send the ad to friends and relatives. The only way you'll earn money is if people respond to your work-at-home ad.

Assembly or craft work. These programs often require you to invest hundreds of dollars in equipment or supplies. Or they require you to spend many hours producing goods for a company that has promised to buy them. For example, you might have to buy a sewing or sign-making machine from the company, or materials to make items like aprons, baby shoes or plastic signs. However, after you've purchased the supplies or equipment and performed the work, fraudulent operators don't pay you. In fact, many consumers have had companies refuse to pay for their work because it didn't meet "quality standards."

Unfortunately, no work is ever "up to standard," leaving workers with relatively expensive equipment and supplies - and no income. To sell their goods, these workers must find their own customers.

The original "Make Money Fast" letter was written in 1988 by a person named David Rhodes (or "Dave Rhodes," which he used as his Internet name).

Biographical details are not certain, but it is often said Rhodes was a student at Columbia Union College who wrote a text file chain letter entitled "Make Money Fast", and uploaded it to a nearby BBS. The scam soon reached the Internet, where it was forwarded over email and Usenet. The chain mail scheme continued, passed from person to person, though it wasn't until spamming became a major problem in early-to-mid 1994 that "Make money fast" exploded.

The text of "Make money fast" originally claimed to be "perfectly legal." It encouraged readers of the email to forward one dollar to a list of people provided in the text, and to add their own name and address to the bottom of the list. Using the theory behind pyramid schemes, the resulting chain of money flowing back and forth would supposedly deliver a reward of thousands of dollars to the ones participating in the chain, as copies of their chain spread and more and more people sent one dollar to their address.

In fact, the idea of a money-forwarding email letter turned out to be worthless. When the popularity of the Internet exploded in the mid-1990s, millions of copies of "Make money fast" were forwarded to unsuspecting Internet users by thousands of different persons. It became one of the most annoying and persistent spams in existence.

Variations on "Make money fast" have evolved, usually by spammers who change the subject of their email to "This really works!," "Try it, it works!," or "You are a winner!"

which was the result of your advertising, I will send you another shiny
new penny!

5. If you have any friends who are as gullible as you are, be sure to pass on
a copy of this message. Think of how angry they would get if they
discovered
you were getting all those shiny new pennies in the mail and not sharing
your secret with them!

6. Remember, I will also accept houses, commercial property, automobiles,
jewelry, small appliances, and other valuables in leu of currency.

You might be skeptical after reading my post. If you need proof, let me tell
you about where I live. This place has more than 600 rooms. A security force
numbering more than 300 works around the clock. There is a kitchen staff of
more than 50 to prepare meals for me and my 1100 friends. Now is that the
life of Riley or what?
