Lottery in the United States

Lottery in the United States
In the United States, the existence of lotteries is subject to the laws of each state; there is no national lottery. Before the advent of state-sponsored lotteries, many illegal lotteries thrived; for example, see Numbers game and Peter H. Matthews. The first state lottery in the U.S. was established in the state of New Hampshire in 1964; today, lotteries are established in forty-one states and the District of Columbia. On October 8, 1970, New York held the first million dollar lottery drawing.

The first modern interstate lottery in the U.S. was Tri-State Lotto. Tri-State Lotto was formed in 1985 and linked the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1988, the Multi-State Lottery Association was formed with Oregon, Iowa, Kansas, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia as its charter members; it is best known for its "Powerball" drawing, which is designed to build up very large jackpots. Another interstate lottery, The Big Game (now called Mega Millions), was formed in 1996 by the states of Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan and Virginia as its charter members.

Other interstate lotteries include: Hot Lotto, Lotto South, and Wild Card 2. For more detailed information on U.S. lotteries, see Lottery (U.S.).

With the advent of the Internet it became possible for people to play on-line, many times for free (the cost of the ticket being supplemented by merely seeing, say, a pop-up ad). Slight wanings in the overall number of people playing by "traditional" ways (paper ticket, $1 per chance) caused several states to combine into multi-state pools of much larger winning amounts. Some of the many websites which offer free games (after registration) include www.iwinweekly.com and the larger iwon.com, which is backed by the CBS broadcasting corporation. GTech Corporation, in the United States, administrates 70% of the worldwide online and instant lottery business, according to its website.

play New York Daily Numbers

Go to your New York Lottery retailer, and tell him your three lucky numbers and that you want to play New York Daily Numbers. Be sure to tell him the drawing you want to play: Midday and/or Evening. If you do not, the Lottery terminal will automatically pick the next available drawing. It's as easy as that.

Or use a playcard. Each playcard has 4 games. You may play 1, 2, 3, or 4 games.

Select three digits (numbers) in each game you want

For each game played, select a wager type: straight, box, straight/ box, or combination. Ask your retailer for a Numbers brochure for an explanation of wager types or go to our Odds section for more details.

For each game played, select an amount to wager: 50ў or $1.00. note: straight/ box must select 50ў wager amount for total cost of $1.00 (50ў for straight/ 50ў for box).

If you want to play more than one ticket per game panel, select the number of tickets. Don't forget to tell the retailer Midday or Evening drawing. For a single play, no mark is required. You can play up to ten tickets per game panel.

If you want to play for more than one day, select a number of days and tell your Lottery retailer if you want to play Midday only, Evening only or both daily draws each day of advance play. You will receive one ticket for Midday drawings and a separate ticket for Evening drawings. Each ticket will be clearly marked "Midday" or "Evening".

Use only blue or black pen or pencil for marking. Red ink will not be accepted. Mark your selections with heavy vertical marks. DO NOT ERASE. If you make a mistake, mark the VOID box for that game and move to the next game.

If you can't think of three numbers, just mark the Quick Pick option to have the computer randomly select all of your numbers for you. No partial quick picks are allowed.

Present your completed playcard to any New York Lottery retailer for processing. And good luck!

Play daily by 12:20 p.m. for the Midday draw and by 7:30 p.m. for the Evening draw.

If you want to play for more than one day, select a number of days and tell your Lottery retailer if you want to play Midday only, Evening only or both daily drawings each day of advance play. prize in EuroMillions lottery

Paris, France (AHN) - Three winning ticket-holders will share the 126 million British pounds – the top prize in EuroMillions, the lottery held in nine European countries. The winners will split the equivalent of $222 million. Two of the winning tickets were purchased in France and one in Portugal, according to the lottery operator. The winning numbers were 9, 21, 30, 39, 50 and the Lucky Stars numbers were 1 and 3. The jackpot in Friday’s drawing swelled after no winners emerged from any lottery since Nov.11. The possible payoff lured would-be millionaires from across the region.
EuroMillions was created two years ago by the lotteries of France, the U.K. and Spain to increase revenue by creating bigger paydays. Revenue at the three companies that run the service has risen during the past two years, and the growth prompted Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and Portugal to join the game in October 2004.

In most European countries, unlike the U.S., winnings aren't subject to income tax and the money is paid out immediately once the winning ticket is validated.

Powerball jackpot - Big win to claim the prize

A Des Moines, Iowa, man started off the New Year with a bang - claiming a $113.2 million Powerball jackpot from the December 14th, 2005, drawing. Hugh Hawkins said he waited for a few weeks after his big win to claim the prize so that he could enjoy the holidays with his family, make plans for what he wanted to do with the money, and identify charities that he could help. Hawkins, 44, was accompanied to the lottery as he claimed his prize by his wife, Cindy, and their children. Hugh chose his winning numbers himself and provided this explanation:

8 is one of his favorite numbers.
15 was the number on his brother’s dirt-racing motorcycle when they were young.
16 is the date of his wife’s birthday.
45 is the age he will be on his next birthday in March.
51 is a number he randomly chose between 45 and 55, the highest number in the Powerball game.
11 is the date of his oldest son’s birthday.
He chose to receive his prize in a lump-sum payment of $54,799,833.72

U.K. Lotto

On January 3rd 2002, Mr R.H. From Switzerland (Who wishes to remain anonymous), received the shock of his life. He was called by Angie (His contact at OSA) who told him he'd won over US$24 Million in U.K. Lotto - which was the biggest individual cash, payment ever! According to Angie, it was several minutes before he could actually speak …
Mr R.H. is a 61-year old Swiss businessman who was travelling in Brazil at the time of his win. He flew to London for the day to collect his prize.

The winner was playing the same combination of numbers in U.K. Lotto, German Lotto, French Lotto, Spanish Lotto and Canadian Lotto through his entry in World Jackpots 6/49 (Where entries in each of these Lottos are made only when a big jackpot begins to accumulate). His numbers came up in U.K. Lotto in the rollover Jackpot Draw on January 2nd, and were the ONLY numbers to win in the huge prize that day!

His winning numbers were 02 - 06 - 20 - 24 - 29 - 32. The U.K. Lotto Jackpot was not won on December 26 so the amount was rolled over to December 29, 2001. It was not won again and rolled over to Wednesday, January 2, when our player's numbers came up. He was the only winner of the Jackpot in that Draw.

He received his cash from OSA in one lump sum - and without paying a cent in taxes.
