Delray teens enrolled in Web-based diet program to be featured on Today

DELRAY BEACH -- Some local teens are discovering a high-tech way to eat better and feel better, and their effort is earning them national publicity.

About a half-dozen girls at Life Skills Center Atlantic, an alternative school at the old Atlantic High School, are trying out a pilot, fast-paced, Web-based program called "Energy Up!" created by celebrity trainer Kathie Dolgin, who prefers to go by "High Voltage."

Through a Webcast, High Voltage informs the teens they can greatly improve their lives by focusing on nutrition, water consumption, exercise, forgiveness and affirmations.

NBC's Today show followed Dolgin, who is host Katie Couric's personal trainer, for a nine-month series that ran from 2003 to 2004. At that time, she was working with students at Mother Cabrini High School in New York. On Monday, a crew came to Life Skills to see how students liked Dolgin's new computer program.

Today producer Dana Glaser said the results in New York were amazing, and she wanted to follow up with what Dolgin is doing now.

"Students' self-esteem improved, they felt better, their relationship with family members were better, their schoolwork was better," Glaser said.

Several teens lost as much as 60 pounds, Dolgin said.

The segment is expected to air in January as part of a "New Year, New You" series, but Glaser didn't have an exact date.

The opportunity to be on television both excited and frightened some of the teens.

"This makes me nervous. I'm young, and I don't know much about this stuff, and a lot of people are going to be watching," said Itzel Calderon, 16, of Lake Worth.

Dolgin has an appearance that commands attention. Her hair is blond and black, and on Monday she was dressed in baggy silver satin workout pants and a white tank top covered by a patterned, see-through, long-sleeve, white shirt. Now 58, Dolgin said she spent much of her 20s as a drug addict, alcoholic and bulimic. After her behavior landed her in a hospital twice, she said she decided to live better.

The students at Life Skills Center are testing her new Web-based health curriculum for the next few months and will provide feedback to Dolgin and iQ Digital, which produces the program. White Hat, an Ohio-based provider of alternative education, owns the Life Skills Center and iQ Digital.

On Monday, students watched a computer program, where Dolgin's High Voltage character talked to them about "the trigger foods" that cause people to overeat, such as white bread, sugar and salt. The Webcast encouraged the teens to read labels and avoid foods that have ingredients with long names.

"It was really cool," said Juritza Beltran, 17, of Boynton Beach. "I learned a lot. I knew about junk food, but I never realized bread was a bad food."
