There are 3 main types of affiliate program: pay per sale, pay per lead and pay per click programs. Furthermore, programs can be flat fee, or commission-based. They can be single tier, two tier (rewarding those who bring in new affiliates) and multi-tier. Each type of program has its advantages and disadvantages, and each is relevant to different sites and situations.
Commission-based Affiliate Programs Commission-based programs are by far the most common type of affiliate program. They are nearly always pay per sale programs, i.e. they pay a predetermined % commission on the revenue generated by the sale of products or services to a visitor who came from your site. Some programs offer incentives to more productive webmasters in the form of an increased commission share on a sliding scale, or by offering their best-performing webmasters cash bonuses or prizes.
Many programs operate on a flat commission rate, irrespective of the volume of sales. A few curious programs "penalize success" by capping or reducing commissions once affiliates go over a certain monthly revenue level (e.g. an affiliate program may pay out a maximum of $500 monthly commission per affiliate). Always read the fine print of the Affiliate Agreement carefully to avoid affiliate programs that tie your hands in this way.
Flat-fee Affiliate Programs (per-lead and per-sale) Although somewhat less popular than commission-based programs, many affiliate programs operate on a flat-fee basis. Essentially, a flat-fee referral program will pay you a predetermined amount for every visitor who carries out at least one purchase or other transaction at the merchant's site, irrespective of the ticket value of that transaction. Flat-fee programs can be as simple as "US$10 per new customer" or "US$5 per order", or they can have more complex fee structures depending on what mix of products or services was sold and how many leads or sales the affiliate closed that month. Some flat-fee programs operate on a per-sale basis. In other words, visitors have to actually purchase and pay for a product or service in order for you to qualify for the referral commission.
Other flat-fee programs, such as those for loans and mortgages, insurance policies and so on, generally operate on a per-lead basis. Each qualifying lead earns you the referral fee. The criteria for qualification can range anywhere from "visitor supplies their name and address" to "visitor completes a multi-page survey and responds to an initial follow-up telephone inquiry." The exact criteria vary with each affiliate program. Pay per click programs Pay-per-Click affiliate programs (also known as click-through programs) pay a small amount for every visitor sent to the target site.
Typical payments range from $0.01 to $0.20 or more per visitor. Some pay-per-click programs pay on a second-page-click basis: you will only get paid if a visitor from your site clicks on one of the links on the page they get to after reaching the affiliate site. Always read the details of each program carefully to find out whether you're going to be paid on a first-page or second-page-click basis as this will have a huge impact on your potential earnings. Typically, requiring a second-page click can cut earnings by 75%-90% compared to a straight clickthough program.
Single-tier Affiliate Programs Single- tier affiliate programs offer the most straightforward tiered structure. Essentially, they are a flat program that rewards only direct transactions i.e. transactions that the affiliate has generated. There is no reward on offer for signing up other affiliates. Single-tier affiliate programs are suitable for any site; your earnings will depend entirely on how well you are able to "pre-sell" the product or service on offer, how many visitors you can send to the target merchant, and how well they are able to work to monetize your traffic.
Two-tier Affiliate Programs - Two-tier affiliate programs reward affiliates in two ways: they reward transactions generated by affiliates, but they also have a system in place to reward affiliates for bringing new affiliates into the program. This is the "second tier" part of two-tier affiliate programs. Second-tier payments can be made on a commission or flat-fee basis. For example, an affiliate program might pay affiliates 20% commission on the transactions they generate, plus 5% of the total earnings of the affiliates that sign up directly under them (that's 5% of 20%, of course). Alternatively, they may pay a flat affiliate referral fee, for example "US$10 bonus for each new affiliate you refer that produces at least US$25 in sales."
Two-tier affiliate programs are good for affiliates who believe they can recruit other productive affiliates. However, you should be wary of any affiliate program that places more emphasis on the earnings to be made by recruiting other affiliates than on the earnings from sales - after all, ultimately someone has to close those sales! You should also be suspicious of programs structured with a very low first-tier payout but a very high second-tier commission - again, that type of structure emphasises the recruiting of affiliates over the sale of products. Two-tier programs are less attractive for affiliates who don't like the idea of essentially recruiting their own competition, or who are exceptionally good at pre-selling customers. In this case, a single-tier affiliate program would be more appropriate.
Multi-tier Affiliate Programs - Multi-tier affiliate programs reward affiliates who sign up other affiliates several levels "deep". In other words, you sign up Bob and Bob signs up Sarah and Sarah signs up John, and you get a percentage of Bob's earnings, Sarah's earnings and John's earnings. The distinction between multi-tier affiliate programs and pyramid schemes is wafer-thin, and one which this site declines to pursue further. For example, some programs are single-tier per-click affiliate programs, some are two-tier per-lead programs. Some affiliate programs are hybrids, combining several different types of reward system into a single affiliate program. We are a merchant new to affiliate marketing. We have a great site, and use Shareasale as our program (which everyone seems to love). Our commission is in line with what our competitors offer. But we get very few signups, and the ones that do, don't do anything.
We joined ABW, "announced" our program - nothing. Nobody cares. Posted in affiliate directories... nothing.

We've had about 65 affiliates signup in the 3 months we've been running the program. 2 sales - both from the same affiliate, and that was because he bought keywords with out website name. So he got some former customers that were just looking for our site.

So basically ZERO real affiliate sales in 3 months.

I'm so frustrated I'm ready to throw in the towel with affiliate marketing.

.... Well, either people don't know about it, or don't think it's promising for them. I'd call a few of the folks you wished would sign up with you and just ask for an honest assessment of what they think of your program. Don't try and sell it to them, or they'll spout what they think will make you go away. Just ask for a straightforward assessment. You're trying to learn here. Ask several. Don't argue with them or disagree, just thank them.
Email is likely to come across as spam. Pick up the phone.

Affiliates will probably size up the site (does it look like it will convert, does it have any leaks - outside links, phone numbers, etc..), what is the average order value likely to be and is the payout high enough to make it worth the effort?
While SAS is popular among some, I've never really done much with it because the EPCs seem low across the board, it often looks like merchants are low on funds in the accounts and the more popular merchants often seem to be on CJ or LinkShare.

Programs I get serious about involve building sites, buying PPC advertising, getting into industry directories, getting PR and rankings etc.

Most companies that start aff programs don't realize what it takes to make a good aff site and think the process simple to the point where I hear many aff managers comment about how we do very little and should be happy with the low commission rate.

Play the whole scenario through. Pretend your an aff in a particular keyword space, make an educated guess as to how many sales are likely and what it would take to get a site up and running to get those sales. Then do the math and see if it is worth the effort.

If you cannot spot scenarios where you could make enough commissions to make yourself happy, others will not be happy either.

As an experienced aff marketer I have gotten pretty good at checking out various product lines and judging my revenue potential in short order. The aff programs I do not sign up for are those I really do not think are worth the effort.

Raise your payout.

.... I am a merchant who is researching affiliate programs right now. I like the low start up for shareasale but I have read about a lot of people with the same problem. They just are not getting enough affiliates to sign up. The next thing that I am going to look into is outsourcing my affiliate program. I just do not have enough time to run my own anyways. .... Building a program up even on a good but small network like SAS still takes pro-active recruiting efforts on your part. If you sit back and 'hope' the good ones find you and get active - they won't. Some top affiliates are on SAS but they are hard to find and you need to have the right stuff.

You don't say what type of site you have but if you have multiple products - GOOD SAS affiliates really like datafeeds so get one. Also it's really important on SAS to be on auto-deposit as top affs have been burned by merchants that didn't keep funds in their account.

.... Great, but you didn't mention why anyone should use your program in preference to your competitors' programs. Or more importantly, why anyone who is already making money in the industry should go to the trouble of switching. Where's the competitive advantage?
It's not just the details of the agreement either. Affiliates have to guess which sites will actually succeed in converting clicks to sales. The difference in profitability from merchant to merchant is far higher than the difference in program details (e.g. a 10% commission vs 15%).

.... This is excellent advice. It's hard to listen to painful facts or opinions without interrupting, but if you want to know the REAL answer to your question this is how to get it.
Also strongly agree with the advice to use the phone. I'd be unlikely to participate in some kind of email survey. Too much like work.

.... very good point. I'm an Amazon affiliate, for example, and I wouldn't switch to another, similiar, online bookstore program even if it paid double what Amazon does. I've tried other programs and they don't convert nearly as well.

.... Some things I look at are:
*Phone numbers, if the site has them I call them. If the rep does not ask for a "code" or a way to track how I came to call I would not join.

*Cookie duration, how long is the duration of yours?

*Other bleeders, anything on the site that could bleed my refferal. Links to other sites,etc..

*AM, is the AM interactive? Do they try to help? Do they treat you like you only put up a link so be quite?

*AM, do I recognize the AM in charge? If so was he/she good or bad at their job?

*Payouts, I lookup the program and research from forum posts if they pay on time.

.... I agree about raising the payout. Many affiliate marketers won't bother if it's not worth the effort.
Also, you might consider that maybe you are not with the right program. You mentioned that everyone seems to love Sharesale and it seems that you chose them based on this.

Did you do any research on networks before picking one?

I'm always shocked by the number of program sponsors who expect me to waste my time digging into every little corner of their sites trying to find answers to simple questions.

Where is the affiliate agreement? What strictures are place on my marketing? What's the payout? How often? Minimum? How do you track sales? Cookie duration? My customer? Or is it a one-shot? What are the linking options? Do you have a feed? Product photos? What are your customer service policies? Etc, etc.

.... It's all about the money. You need to pay more than your competitors or convert better and hopefully both. If you are in a competitive space, then why should affilaites promote you over your compeitition.

But the big-time affiliates will always pick the higher-volume payout program when all other things are equal. You won't need hundreds of affiliates if the few you have are very productive.

.... I'd like to reiterate among all these that if I go to the landing page of my affiliate link, and I feel like it's confusing or wouldn't convert well, I won't bother either. As an example, if it's "pay per lead," and the affiliate landing page is a "Sign up FREE" form that the user can fill out right there, that's a good sign. If the landing page has some tiny little "signup" link in the corner, and it's not immediately obvious what I (the user) should do, it's not worth me (as an affiliate) trying to promote that.

Webmasters Affiliate Programs

Hi,
I have a good product that in the direct channell is well positioned and does very well. Its a sports holiday though and while there is a good demand the sale tends to be consulative. Thus I have not bothered with a shopping basket on the website so far.

I have some affilliates within the sport who at this point send me the leads and we close them ourselves. This has worked well pretty much on trust. They would figure out sooner or later that I was cooking the books , which is a no brainer loss in the long run.

I am keen to see if any of you guys work on a similar basis sending people leads and if in fact a norm has developed around this practice . How should i got about finding more affilliates? We pay about 16o USD ( were based in Spain ) for a lead we close and 180 if its presented as a closed lead ready to book.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

How can I find somebody who is willing to sell something to my traffic?

And the most important question how do I protect myself from fraud if a visitor really bought something in supplier's Web-site?

I noticed that you are talking about cj.com. I visited this Web-site ... at the first glance it gave me no understanding what that is. At second glance it gave also no understanding what that is. I tried to find Register in a section somebody mentioned here (About Us -> Company ...), nothing there ... can they help in my case or they are aimed to suppliers?

I guess all these questions were already answered thousand of times, but no FAQ, that is why I'm asking ...

You would be a publisher/affiliate.

Various ways. Look in the search engines for " widget affiliate program" and replace widget with whatever products you are targetting. Also there are the affiliate networks such as Cj, linkshare etc. which list various programs.

Make test purchases to verify that sales are being tracked.

Added banners to website

Well I just added banners to my website. I put up a couple companies for free to test the banner program.
I noticed they are getting about 2% CTR. The banners are located on the top right of the page and they are about 120x60 pixel banners.

I also have AdSense on the website as well which is generating a bit of revenue.

I was curious what tips some users here might have about banner advertising. I'm still new so I don't know what to charge, how to charge and where the prime placements should be for banners without interfering with my AdSense.

.... why dont you try doing a search for sites similar to yours and see which ones come out on top. Then take a look at how those top performing sites do and what they charge.

.... As for the banner sizes, you might want to try having the banners 1 pixel smaller or bigger than the regular sizes. Sometimes this helps from getting the banners blocked by those anti-spyware kinds softwares.

.... Not sure what you mean. Are you an affiliate or an advertiser? Are you selling your own product or do you have a content rich site and you are trying to monetize it with affiliate marketing?

.... Your website should give a clear idea of what you have to offer. Once you have it up and running, you'll need to market it. Marketing doesn't mean that you have to go out and do offline sales pitches; you can market online in many different ways. I'd start reading the forums here to get more information.

.... Not necessary to do off-line marketing, infact hardly any webmaster does that. So don't worry about you being quiet. :) You definitely need to be smart though on how to market your site over the internet.

.... i doubt anyone will give away their answers to success that easily ;-)

many people have spent a lot of time and done a lot of testing to get to where they are now. what works for someone might not work for you as well. you might take a slightly different approach to the same affiliate scheme, but even a slight change from what works may fail miserably.

If you want to get into affiliate schemes, you are going to have to invest time and money into the project otherwise it will not work.

you can get lots of tips about how to increase conversions etc from this site, but no one is going to give you the answer to your question. if they do, all they will be doing is creating competition and that product would become worthless when the costs rise in promotion.

Yeah.U r right, briggidere! All affiliates have to put lots of efforts to success. I suggest when putting ads on google,we have to choose right keywords to get clicks.Most importantlay,take time to do research which keywords get more CTRs.Make necessary changes - add new keywords or chage existing keywords.I mean keep adjusting to keywords and ad text it self until u get desired results.

It has no clear mention from where the

Putting up affiliate links

Putting up affiliate links is usually more work than using adsense, but there's no reason not to try it. A couple of comments on the amazon links:
-- Word your "invitation" so that it's obvious the link leads to amazon rather than another game on your site (amazon likes you to do this, too). Since you do have links leading to other games on your site, make it easy for someone to tell the difference between the two kinds of links.

--Don't stop with related games. Get creative in thinking of other kinds of items your specific audience might be interested in buying. Just one example is that amazon has a number of DVDs available in the "UMD mini for PSP" format, which seems to be a hot thing right now (although I might be behind the times on that). amazon has a mind-staggering number of things available, in categories most people wouldn't even know they carried. Take a look through them with your audience in mind. And, no, I don't work for amazon, but I do go on regular "hunting trips" to find unusual things my site visitors might be interested in - and some of them sell pretty well, too (okay, I'll admit that some of them don't). Definitely works best with a niche-related site, so you can target your audience.

Website with my own flash games

Hi,
I have a website with my own flash games (currently 3, but I'm working on more). I'm getting about $350 to $500 for direct sponsorship of my games, which is nice.

The website is only about a month old, but my traffic is slowly increasing - at the start of the month, I was getting 200 unique visitors a day, now it's about 600 to 1000. Which isn't a lot yet, but my goal was 2000 a day in 6 months, and if it keeps going like this, I could achieve this goal in another few weeks.

But my advertising is making me nothing. I'm using adbrite and contextclick, but they're not working for me. I can't use Adsense, because I was suspended a while ago with another website (I guess it was partly my fault, even though I feel it isn't justified), and they don't give you a second chance. I can't use Yahoo Publisher Network either, because even though 80% of my traffic is from the USA, I myself live in Europe. I know there aren't any alternatives that make nearly as much as Adsense, but maybe some affiliate programs would work well for me... Any recommendations on programs I should try, and how I could achieve good results?

Any advice is appreciated.

I consider affiliate programs (where you earn money only after a sale/lead is generated) a rip off. You are providing them with FREE advertising (branding)and usually getting very little in return. It's too good of a deal for the advertiser and not the publisher.
Here is an example...

I run an automotive website and have some links for car insurance companies (affiliate programs) they pay anywhere from $4-$9 per LEAD (valid, quote request form filled out)

Then I look at their ppc advertising on google/yahoo and they are paying $5-$9 PER CLICK! Who knows how many clicks they need to get one valid quote.

I also recently spoke with an affiliate manager for a insurance quoting service and when I asked why other companies are paying so much per click and so little per lead she had no answer for me.

I had the same problem with auto financing, was only getting paid $50 per Sale and finally made a deal with a small lender and they are paying a flat monthly fee that is five times as much as I was earning with an affiliate program!

Am I missing somehting?

Thumbnails must be cut

Los Angeles: United States Internet giant Google infringed copyright rules by posting thumbnail-size photos from other websites on its search-results pages, a US judge said in a ruling issued yesterday.

US District Judge Howard Matz’s ruling, handed down in Los Angeles, stems from a lawsuit filed in 2004 by the pornography firm Perfect 10, which accused Google of breaching its copyrights.

The type of search with which Perfect 10 took issue is Google’s image search function, which returns a page with tiny images known as thumbnails that fit the searcher’s query.

The image-search function also allows searchers to view an image as it appears on the source website.

The judge ruled that because Google receives advertising money by offering search functions, it is not entitled to the same level of free use of the images as other entities would be.

Much of Google’s revenues come from so-called keyword searches that link advertisers to users by users’ search criteria.

Judge Matz said Google’s use of pictures was different from that of Arriba Soft Corp which a US court of appeals in California earlier ruled was operating within fair use principles by creating and using thumbnail images on its site.

His ruling also notes that because Perfect 10 sells similarsize versions of its images to mobile-phone users through a separate company, Fonestarz Media, Perfect 10 stands to lose revenue if its request for a court order blocking Google’s use of the thumbnails is not granted.

The ruling asks both sides in the case to come up with the terms of a preliminary injunction that would bar Google from using the thumbnail images.

Google lawyers said in a statement that while the company is disappointed with portions of the ruling, we are pleased with Judge Matz’s favourable ruling on linking and other aspects of Google Image Search. AFP
